OVERGLAZE ENAMELS

In Chinese ceramics enamels may be applied either to a pre-fired unglazed body (biscuit) or the surface of a high-fired glaze, after which the object is fired a second time at a lower temperature. Included in this category are four types of wares that are sometimes described separately: Famille Verte (with four or more overglaze colors, but highlighting the green family), Wucai (having underglaze blue as well

as overglaze enamels), Doucai (lightly painted enamels within underglaze blue outlines), and Imari (featuring iron red and gold).
