PAIR OF BLUE & WHITE DISHES
KANGXI PERIOD (1661-1722)
Diameter: 10 ¾ inches
Christie's London, April 28, 1999, lot 99
A pair of blue and white ship plates, painted with a central roundel enclosing a schooner fully rigged with flags and under sail, the well and broad rim with three geometric pattern panels divided by scrolling lotus.
For a very similar dish, compare the example in the Hodroff Collection, illustrated by D.S. Howard, 1994, no. 143, p.46, where the author says "The comparative rarity of this design suggests an initiative by a private trader with experience of Japan, rather than an order from the Dutch East India Company itself." A plate with this design was sold at Christie's, 17 November 1986, lot 377.
